AFFORDABLE HOUSING

India’s first 3D-printed home offers affordable housing ‘solution’

Large-scale 3D printing is gaining steam around the world, with some projects producing a home in just 24 hours of printing time for a few thousand dollars. Unlike other uses of 3D printing – such as medical devices – the process, also known as additive manufacturing, typically uses some form of quick-drying concrete laid precisely by a computer-controlled extruder.

Opportunities and Obstacles When Converting a Building from Hotel or Office Use to Multifamily

Among many challenges brought about by COVID-19, changing community needs have illuminated growing underutilization and vacancy among commercial buildings. With the recent drop in hotel occupancy and office tenants reconsidering how much space they need due to the pandemic, some owners are considering converting the use of their existing building to multifamily. While some properties are excellent candidates for such a conversion, there are some potential obstacles that must be considered before committing to convert a property to multifamily.

MOBILITY

How France is testing free public transport

The idea of free public transport is by no means new. In France, it’s already a reality for hundreds of thousands of people in more than 30 municipalities, like Dunkirk’s neighbour Calais, the Marseille suburb of Aubagne, and Colombiers, a suburb of Toulouse that in 1971 became the first fare-abolition experiment in Europe. Further afield, in 2013 the Estonian city of Tallinn became the first EU capital to make the switch and last year Luxembourg, with its population of 626,000, became the first country to offer totally free public transport.
