OPPORTUNITIES

Reshaping Cities – Post-Pandemic Perspectives

We are living in challenging times. ULI and the Sharing Cities Alliance invite you to join us to learn about opportunities for change in our post-pandemic world.  In this environment, predicting how the future will unfold is next to impossible. However, we know that technological, social, and environmental developments within our societies are changing the way we live, work, learn, and play. We know that resilience is essential to our ability to adapt and resilience is born, in part, from information exchange and problem solving. Therefore, it is critical to exchange insights and try to turn challenges into opportunities, together. We invite you to participate in this learning experience designed to expose you to different people sharing their experiences and perspectives.

Why Rent Control Doesn’t Work

As cities become ever-more expensive, politicians and housing advocates keep calling for rent control. Economists think that’s a terrible idea. They say it helps a small (albeit noisy) group of renters, but keeps overall rents artificially high by disincentivizing new construction. So what happens next?

Mobility

RTD reports fare collection on all RTD transit services and front-door boarding on buses will resume July 1. RTD had implemented rear-door boarding on its buses and suspended fare collection to provide another layer of social distancing between operators and riders. With COVID-19 restrictions lifting and people starting to return to their physical workplaces and taking more trips, it’s time to resume normal operations. RTD encourages use of apps for purchasing tickets to reduce contact with the fare box and buy tickets through the following apps: mobile ticketing, Uber and Transit.

Denver Council Member Kendra Black reports Denver’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure has begun work on a project that will close lanes at Hampden & Colorado intersection for 10 months. The project will create a safer, more convenient connection for people who walk and ride bikes on the High Line Canal Trail, building two underpasses to reroute the trail under Colorado Boulevard and Hampden Avenue.

Real Estate & Mobility

Denver Council Member Jolon Clark Denver has created a temporary program to expand options for restaurants, bars and other similar businesses to operate in outdoor settings adjacent to their businesses. Proposals may include expansion into designated outdoor areas such as adjacent parking lots, streets and sidewalks. Considerations will include safety, mobility, and local and emergency access.

The Civic Center Conservancy reports a transformation of Bannock Street, located in front of the Denver City and County Building, is underway. This project will create a people-focused public gathering space on the west side of Civic Center for people to enjoy year-round and will close the street to motorized vehicles. A Pat Milbery mural will be the signature of Phase 1 of this project, which will also include trees with planters and moveable furniture.
